On 5th July 1980, Tom Shufflebotham set a world record by charming 511 worms out of the ground in half an hour. The village of Willaston, in Cheshire, has been the venue for the annual Worm Charming World Championships ever since.
This Saturday, the competitor who charms the most worms out of a 3 x 3 metre plot will win a trophy in the shape of a golden rampant worm. While a silver trophy goes to the competitor who charms out the heaviest worm.
The rules state that any form of music may be used, but no drugs or water can be given to the worms, as this may encourage them. If you’re attending this odd event, make sure you send us your pictures and comments.
